Ingredient Notes

  • Brown Sugar – you can use light or dark brown sugar in the recipe.
  • Old Fashioned Oats – we prefer the texture in the finished cookies of old-fashioned oats, but you can use quick oats if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Dried Cranberries – any type of dried cranberry is okay. Sometimes they can be called craisins. They are the same thing.
  • White Chocolate Chips – better quality white chocolate chips yield the best results. You can also use dark chocolate chips.

These ingredients make one recipe that fits in a regular mouth quart-size (32-ounce) mason jar.

How to Assemble Cookies in a Jar

In the order listed, layer the non-perishable ingredients in a clean 1-quart jar.

Layer 1:  1/3 cup white sugar

Layer 2:  1/3 cup packed brown sugar (pack it down once you add it to the jar)

Layer 3:  3/4 cup flour + 1/2 teaspoon baking powder + 1/8 teaspoon salt + pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg (mixed together)

Layer 4:  1 cup old fashion rolled oats

Layer 5:  1 cup dried cranberries

Layer 6:  1 cup white chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips

RECIPE NOTE: The final recipe also calls for unsalted butter, an egg, and pure vanilla extract.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make sure to spoon and level the flour. Spoon the flour out of its container, place it in the measuring cup, and then level it with a knife. If you scoop it with the measuring cup, the flour will compact, which affects the final measurement.
  • A funnel can help fill the jars more easily as long as the opening isn’t too small.
  • Plan ahead to make multiple mason jars. This recipe is the perfect size for a one-quart size mason jar. So, if you make more than one at a time, which we highly recommend since you’re getting all the ingredients out, you’ll need multiple jars.
  • You can make this cookie-in-a-jar recipe up to a month before you gift it.
  • Store the baked cookies on the counter in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. Freeze cookies for 3 months in an airtight container.

These cookies bake up crisp on the edges and soft on the inside. Perfect!

PRO TIP: No dried cranberries? Raisins, dried currants, or dried cherries also work.
