Crock Pot FAQs

Is it safe to leave the crockpot on when I’m not home?

Slow cookers are designed to be left on while you’re not home! It’s perfectly safe to switch on your crockpot in the morning and leave for the day. It’s comparable to leaving a light bulb on.

Can I cook frozen chicken in the crockpot?

There is some debate around this topic. As a general rule, chicken should be thawed in the refrigerator before placing it in your slow cooker. Frozen meat (especially chicken) thawed in the crockpot can stay at unsafe temperatures (40-140 degrees F.) for extended lengths of time. This, combined with the moist heat, makes it a breeding ground for bacteria and food-borne illnesses.

However, many people find it perfectly safe if the chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F., which the FDA recommends. In short, you’ll have to use your best judgment and do what you’re comfortable with.

Is it better to cook chicken on high or low in the crockpot?

We find chicken cooks best low and slow, so we recommend cooking chicken on low for consistent results. However, if you’re in a hurry, you can cook it on high, but be aware it can turn out dry.
