What Is Dump Cake?

What is a dump cake? It's when you literally "dump" everything in your slow cooker, and you get to bite into a delicious Apple Cinnamon Cake once it's done cooking. 

It's better if you top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzle a little caramel sauce over it.

Ingredient Notes

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this crockpot apple pie dump cake. If you keep them in your pantry, you can make this dessert all season long, especially on short notice.

• Apple Pie Filling - two cans.
• Yellow Cake Mix - 1 box of dry cake mix. You can also choose a different cake flavor if you like.
• Butter, melted - salted butter. 
• Ground Cinnamon - to add just the right amount of spice.
• Toasted Chopped Pecans - an optional ingredient to give your recipe some nutty flavor and texture.

What size crockpot?

This is a good question since there are varying sizes of slow cookers.

To cook this Apple Dump Cake Recipe, use a 5-6-quart crockpot for best results. 

Step By Step Instructions

1. ADD PIE FILLING TO CROCKPOT - Take two cans of apple pie filling and spread them in the bottom of your crockpot.
2. MIX CAKE AND OTHER INGREDIENTS - In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the cake mix, ground cinnamon, chopped pecans, and melted butter. 
3. PLACE CAKE IN CROCKPOT - Crumble the cake mixture over the apple pie filling.
4. COOK - Place a double layer of paper towels on top of your slow cooker. Place the lid over the paper towel and make sure it is secure. ( See below. The paper towels will prevent condensation from dripping onto the cake) Cook on high for 2 hours. (low for 3-4 hours)

Note: There is no need to grease the crockpot before putting the ingredients in because you add butter to the recipe.

How to make a gluten-free apple cake in the Crockpot

To make a gluten-free Apple Dump Cake, make sure you use a certified gluten-free cake mix in the recipe and double-check that the apple pie filling is GF.

Then, make the recipe as instructed. 

If you would like a vegan version:

• Replace the butter with coconut oil, and make sure to use a vegan cake mix.

Tips & tricks

• Every crockpot model is a little different, so your cook time may vary. Our advice, watch the recipe closely the first time you make it, so you get a perfectly cooked cake. If your slow cooker runs hot, we recommend checking it after 1.5 hours. 
• To prevent the condensation from dripping on your cake and making it soggy, make sure to place towels between the crock and the crockpot lid. 
• If you have a nut allergy to work around, omit the pecans when making your slow cooker apple dump cake.
