Ingredient Notes

Here’s what you’ll need to make your monster snack:

Ingredients to make monster apples

Apples – I prefer this Halloween recipe with green apples (like Granny Smith apples), but you can also use red apples.
Strawberries – cut into thin slices for the tongue.
Peanut Butter – creamy peanut butter is the way to go! However, you can use other nuts or seed butter if needed.
Sunflower Seeds – for the teeth.
Candy Eyeballs – found in most major grocery stores in the baking aisle, as well as Target and Walmart.

Substitutions

  • If you have allergy concerns and need a nut butter alternative, use sunflower butter (made from sunflower seeds).
  • Instead of sunflower seeds for the teeth, you can use almonds, raisins, or pieces of marshmallows.
  • To make the tongues for your Apple Monster Mouths, you can substitute cut grapes or pitted, sliced cherries for the strawberries.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Gather your ingredients, and let’s get started!

Make sure your apples and strawberries are washed and dried before you begin.

  1. Cut Apples: To start, core and cut your apples into quarters. Then, slice your strawberries into thin strips.
  1. Cut Mouths: Next, carefully cut a mouth shape in the center of a quarter of an apple. If you happen to go all the way through to the other side, that’s fine. The peanut butter usually covers it up. The shape should resemble a cat’s eye.

  1. Add Peanut Butter: Smear peanut butter inside the cut apple (top and bottom).

Note: This doesn’t have to be a thick layer; it just needs to hold your “teeth” and “tongue” in place.

  1. Add Tongue, Teeth + Eyes: Place your strawberry tongue in the bottom center of the apple mouth. Then, push the sunflower seeds into the peanut butter and apple just hard enough to stay put. Now, take a dab of peanut butter, put it on the back of the candy eyes, and attach them to the top of the apple.

Note: Get creative with your eyes. Use one, two, or three on your Monster Apple snacks, depending on how you want your creation to look.

Enjoy!

My Best Tips & Tricks

  • APPLES: We think this Monster Apples recipe is adorable with green apples, but any variety of apples will work.
  • PEANUT BUTTER: Creamy peanut butter spreads easier than chunky, but use whatever peanut butter you prefer.
  • MAKE-AHEAD: This healthy Halloween treat is best eaten after you make it, but we’ve enjoyed them the next day with only minimal browning—which only added to the spookiness!

How to Prevent Your Apples From Browning

If you’re worried that the apples may become brown before eating them, simply cover the cut portion with lemon juice. We find the peanut butter does a great job on its own, though.
