Pampering Bath bombs are so popular these days, and if you’ve walked into a Lush boutique, you know that they come in almost every size, shape, color, and scent you can imagine! Lush bath bombs are pretty amazing but pretty expensive.

Here’s a Valentine’s Day DIY with straightforward, simple instructions you can make at home that won’t break the bank—Luxury Heart-Shaped Bath Bombs!

Ingredient Notes & Supplies  

We designed this recipe so that it’s easy to follow and doesn’t require any hard-to-find ingredients. 

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda – make sure you use fresh ingredients. Older baking soda may not activate and create fizz, as well as fresh baking soda. 
  • 1/2 cup citric acid – again, fresh ingredients make the best fizzing bath bomb. 
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 3 tablespoons oil – the best oils to use are olive oil, coconut oil, or castor oil.
  • Vegetable-based food coloring  – Coloring is optional, but using a more natural color coloring is best for your skin and body. You can use any color you like, but for Valentin’s Day, pink or red is nice.
  • Your choice of essential oils – we like lavender, peppermint, or orange essential oils for this recipe. Make sure to use therapeutic-grade essential oils in the recipe.

Steps to Make Valentine’s Day Bath Bombs

Step 1 – Mix Dry Ingredients

Place the dry ingredients in a bowl and mix with a whisk or fork.

Step 2 – Mix Liquid Ingredients

In the small bowl, mix the liquid ingredients (including food coloring if using) until well blended.

Step 3 – Add Liquid Mixture to Dry

In the large bowl, slowly add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients a little bit at a time. The mixture should hold together when squeezed without crumbling.

Pro Tip: Don’t mix the wet and dry ingredients too quickly. This will activate the mixture and it will begin to fizz.

Step 4 – Pack Mixture Into Mold

When well mixed, pack the mixture into your heart-shaped bath bomb mold, pack it tightly, and then let it dry for at least 8 hours before removing it from the mold. Make sure you work quickly, so the mixture doesn’t begin to dry out while filling the mold.

Bath Bombs need a day (to several days) to harden fully. If they’re not quite hardened enough, they may crumble when you handle them, so check to make sure before taking them out of the mold.

Heart-Shaped Bath Bomb Molds

Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t mix the wet and dry ingredients too quickly. This will activate the mixture, and it will begin to fizz.
  • When putting the mixture in the heart-shaped mold, work quickly so that it doesn’t dry out as you go.
  • To extend the life of your bath bomb, keep it stored in an airtight container away from water until ready to use. 

How To Use 

To use your bath bomb, fill your tub with warm water and drop in your bath bomb. It will fizz and release the scent (if you used essential oils) and all the skin-softening agents.

Soak for about 20 – 30 minutes.

Bath bombs are best stored in an airtight container away from moisture. Some people like to place them in plastic/cling wrap and then in an airtight container to have them last longer.
